FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act)

Federal law giving eligible employees up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave to care for a family member.

What they don't tell you

Unpaid is the operative word. Some employers offer paid leave on top; some states require it. Use it for hospital-to-home transitions, post-surgical recovery, and the chaos period after a serious diagnosis.
